2018 Art Peep Show
John Esbenshade created a micro magic world
In January of 2018, Modern Art put out a call for artists interested in partaking in an experiment called the Art Peep Show. The project began by creating a small gallery space within the studio to be taken over by a new artist each day. Thirty artists were assigned a day to contribute to the 8' x 8'x8’ life-size diorama, using the theme 'THE EXPERIMENT' to guide their contribution. Artists were given the freedom to use the space in whatever way they liked: some displayed artwork, some performed, some projected, some spent the day writing, some spent the day painting, some filled the space with penguins, robots, and mushrooms.
The only way to view the work was through two small peep holes in a covered window. The nature of this unusual set-up invites curiosity and creates an interactive dynamic between the art and the "peeper". It allows passers-by to engage in a new piece of art everyday, delighting in the surprise of an art intervention.
