The Society of the Lost and Found

We are very proud to announce that The Society of the Lost and Found will be presenting their work for open critique at Modern Art this May. While their interests lie specifically in the history, theory and practice of the Lost and Found, some members also dabble in the fine arts, and have shown great proficiency across a variety of media. Work will be on display, and open for feedback, beginning May 3. Modern Art will also be presenting an installation of their own, inspired by the work of the Society.

We think you will find this all very interesting.

Frank Fairfield Returns: April 25

FrankFairfield-RyanMastro-teaser Mark your calendars, friends. On Friday,  April 25 one of our favorite performers ever to take the Tiny Modern Stage returns to the Tiny Modern Stage: the one and only Frank Fairfield. Ever since our first conversation with him, when we so naively asked him "You're not from here, are you?" (and by here, we didn't mean just the LNC), we've been in love.

Since we've last seen Frank, he's been on to some great things. Reviewed in the NYT,  and released a new seven-inch vinyl single, available on Jack White's  Third Man Records. You can read more about him here.

Check back soon for more info on tickets, times and the cool poster we've designed (which is only a vision, but a beautiful one,  in our head right now....)

THIS SUNDAY (1/18) at MODERN ART: appalachian awesomeness

Singing, stories, banjo, fiddle, guitar, flat foot dancing and MORE. Doors open at 4:00 for light pot luck. Bring a little something to share; hunk of cheese, rice, salad, bottle of wine. Show starts at 5:00 BYOB.

SANDS AT MODERN ART

sands Come enjoy the lovely music of the one and only Sands Hall at It's Modern Art this Sunday, December 8. Mingling starts at 4, music around 5.

Along with Sands, there will be drinks, snacks, laughter, knock-knock jokes, paint cans, twinkling lights, fortune telling, bunnies, kids, gifts, yarn, friends, and more. (Donations welcome, but not required.)

IMG_0514_2When Sands was fourteen, her father purchased, for $150 from a hard-up student at UC Berkeley, a OOO-18 Martin, and this is the battered wonderful guitar she still uses. She also plays a bit of mandolin and has recently begun to study the fiddle. Sands grew up on Joan Baez and Judy Collins and was further inspired by Joni Mitchell; the 3 Js, as she refers to them, were big influences on the way to her becoming a singer/songwriter. She also loves the old "story songs": "Long Black Veil" (here she performs with her brother-in-law Louis B Jones and Tabla player Joe Fajen), "South Caost the Wild Coast" (with Maggie McKaig and Luke Wilson), "Pretty Polly" and other murder ballads. The Return of ArtBike

ArtBikeArtBike is back, and we're ready for you and your pedaling feet. From 12-6pm on October 5-6 come swing by Modern Art, hand over a photo ID, then cruise around the grand olde LNC all crazy and stuff.

Maybe you wanna take The Pretty Lady for a spin? Or perhaps you're more the Letterman's type? OR maybe you are a small child, so feeling more like the Nuggit. We'll help you find your 2-wheeled match.

After you've done your spinning, check out our Bizarre Art Bazaar with lovely wares from the likes of some fabulous Modern Artists. Pick up a t-shirt, a onesie, some stickers, a button. You can even take home a lovely reminder of your exciting adventure (and your new bike match), with one of our ArtBike Posters. (They'll look great in your kitchen.)

Can't wait to see you. (In the meantime, check out some of these pics)
